More than 90% of Trinidad and Tobago is ocean. There are mangrove forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds, sandy shores and even an assortment of deep-sea habitats. Despite a nationwide disconnect from our ocean, we rely on our seas for energy, food, recreation, transport, and tourism. Our marine and coastal resources are some of our country’s greatest assets, and although ecologically diverse, they are under threat from an increasing human population and our unrestrained use.
SpeSeas is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to appreciate and use our oceans now but also in the future. We foster scientific study, engage and educate stakeholders, and advocate for the sustainable use of the seas surrounding Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean. We believe that a healthy ocean is vital for us as a country and a region, and hope to help others understand that too!
