Our Projects

Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago and the High Seas (2026 – present)
Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago and the High Seas is a month-long deep-sea research expedition taking place from 29 June to 28 July 2026 aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Research Vessel Falkor (too).
Comments on EIAs (2017 – present)
SpeSeas reviews and provides scientific input on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) related to coastal and marine development projects in Trinidad and Tobago. Through evidence-based feedback, we aim to strengthen decision-making, highlight potential impacts on marine ecosystems, and support more sustainable ocean use.

Turtle Spotter Challenge (2023 – present)
SpeSeas, in collaboration with Save Our Sea Turtles (SOS), would like to work with YOU! We are engaging members of the public, as citizen scientists, to help us monitor and conserve sea turtles in Trinidad and Tobago.
Rescue d Reef (2022 – present)
Rescue D Reef is a creative project raising awareness about our ocean’s coral reefs, which are vital to the survival of life and impact us in countless ways. Our marine and coastal resources are some of our country’s greatest assets, and they are under threat from an increasing human population and our unrestrained use.

My Deep-Sea Backyard (2017 – 2022)
‘My Deep Sea, My Backyard’ took place in two small island developing states – the Republic of Kiribati and Trinidad and Tobago – from summer 2018 to summer 2019. It utilised deep-sea Drop Cameras developed by National Geographic’s Exploration Technology team and OpenROV’s Trident Remotely Operated Vehicles to explore our mesophotic zone and deep ocean for the first time.
The Maritime Ocean Collection (2018 – 2019)
The Maritime Ocean Collection is an underwater collection of Tobago’s coral reefs for awareness, engagement and education to instil a sense of stewardship for these fragile marine ecosystems.

International Year of The Reef (2018)
IYOR is a global effort initiated by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) to raise awareness and understanding of the value of and the threats to coral reefs, to increase the effectiveness of conservation, research, and management efforts worldwide. In recent decades, more frequent, severe, and widespread coral bleaching has devastated much of the world’s coral reefs.
